What is a crown?
A crown is an artificial restoration that fits over the remaining part of a prepared tooth, making it strong and giving it the shape of a natural tooth.
Why might a crown be needed?
Crowns are an ideal restoration for teeth that have been broken or have become weakened. Crowns can be made of ceramic or gold or a combination of these materials.
A dental crown could be used on teeth for many reasons, including:
- You may have discoloured fillings and would like to improve the appearance of the tooth
- You may have had a root filling which has weakened the tooth & will need a crown to protect it
- The crown may help hold a bridge or denture more firmly in place
- To strengthen a heavily filled or broken down tooth
- To help prevent fractures in a tooth from getting worse
